Clare is a major regional centre with a population of 2930 and has a diverse local economy of grape-growing, wine production, broad-acre farming, livestock rearing, light manufacturing and tourism. It also provides the main regional base for government departments and utilities such as ETSA (Electricity Distribution) and SA Water. The town boasts major chain stores, including Woolworths and Target as well as furniture, homewares and clothing stores. There is a main post office, newsagent, a library and all night petrol stations. There are three hotels and many restaurants and cafes to accompany the many wineries and cellar doors. The annual Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend, held each May for over 20 years, is a major event that attracts foodies and wine-lovers from afar. Clare provides the main medical services for the Mid North region, with a medical centre, doctor’s surgery, operating hospital with obstetric services, chiropractor, dietician, speech pathologist, podiatrist, physiotherapists and chemists. There is also a range of supported accommodation for aged care. Clare has two child care centres, a kindergarten, a public primary school and high school as well as a Catholic primary school and a Lutheran primary school. Clare has exceptional recreational facilities, with the golf and country club and the valleys lifestyle centre. The Clare Valleys lifestyle centre provides high quality facilities including; indoor basketball courts, squash courts, equipped weights and cardio room, indoor hydrotherapy pool and outdoor 25m swimming pool. The centre provides learn to swim classes, aqua aerobics, kindergym, and aerobics classes. There are many sporting competitions in Clare including, netball and football, cricket, hockey, squash, basketball, volleyball, ping pong, bowls, croquet and throughout summer many social competitions including touch football and mixed netball. There is an avid bike culture in Clare as the Riesling trail provides a 30km bike trail through the valley. Clare provides the main church services for the region with weekly services at the Lutheran, Catholic, and Anglican Churches. There are a wide variety of housing options available in Clare from historic homesteads to new house and land packages.
