Known as “Australia’s Little Cornwall”, Moonta has a rich copper mining heritage dating back to the mid 1800’s. Fast becoming a popular ‘seachange’ location, Moonta (including Port Hughes) has a significant housing development underway, reflective of a number of areas around the country where retirees seek to settle by the sea. Employment opportunities span a range of vocations, from various trades servicing the township, also relied upon heavily by a number of surrounding towns, to substantial tourism and hospitality opportunities. The building and construction industries are experiencing rapid growth including associated vocations such as real estate. The ‘Dunes’ residential development at Port Hughes among other development sites is seeing a steady increase in population that will continue for the foreseeable future. This development includes a ‘Greg Norman’ golf course, with plans for a clubhouse in addition to a shopping precinct – providing a range of new opportunities for people planning on relocating here. The town has a medical clinic and private hospital in addition to retirement villages providing a range of health and allied health vocational opportunities. With a population of over 3000 and growing, the town has a kindergarten and an Area School catering for reception to year 12 students and is just 15 minutes from the Kadina TAFE and a range of training providers. With a rich copper mining history, the towns heritage including historic buildings and artefacts remain a tourism drawcard, in addition to its pristine waters that are perfect for fishing (licenced and recreational) and recreational swimming. The town also has a number of restaurants and hotels, a large number of self-contained accommodation options, and a variety of retail shopping outlets including clothing, house furnishings to hardware, sporting shops and more. A number of sporting clubs provide for a range of age groups and sporting interests. House prices range from under $200,000 through to over 1 million dollars with a variety of styles including historic stone homes to modern brick and designer homes.
