Balaklava is well known across South Australia for the annual Balaklava Cup the largest country horse racing carnival in South Australia. Situated only one hour from Adelaide, Balaklava has developed as a hub for agricultural production, processing and exporting. Major agricultural companies such as Balco developed in the region and have established their headquarters in the town. Balaklava supports a population of 1522 and acts as the main service centre for the surrounding agricultural area, with major supermarkets, banking facilities, schools, health services and recreational facilities. There are four education institutions in Balaklava – the Balaklava Community Kindergarten, Balaklava Primary School, Balaklava High School and the Balaklava Horizon Christian School. Health services include doctors, dentists, physios and chemists. There is also a retirement village that provides supported accommodation through to respite care. The town has many sporting facilities and clubs, such as the local basketball competitions, cricket and tennis in summer, with football and netball in winter. The basketball, netball & tennis courts along with the newly developed indoor cricket nets are all centralised on the one ground, Ralli Park, with the oval 20 metres away. Balaklava also has its own solar heated swimming pool complex, which is open to the public from mid October through to April. For those a little more adventurous, the town also hosts skydiving and gliding clubs and a pistol club that is the training ground for police officers and Olympians. Balaklava also holds its own music Eisteddfod every year in early August and has a golf course, croquet and bowling club. New housing estates have been developed that maintain the aesthetics of the region, with large block sizes at affordable rates.
